Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles Tendonitis

Tendinopathy is a term describing pain, swelling and impaired function of a tendon.

The Achilles tendon is the thickest and strongest tendon in the human body. It is made up of fibres from the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles in the calf.

Achilles tendinopathy is a common condition in active people.

Typical signs and symptoms of Achilles tendinopathy include:

  • Aching or sharp pain in the heel area. Pain is aggravated by activity or direct pressure to the painful site.
  • Stiffness in the tendon. This may be more prominent first thing in the morning or after prolonged static positions.
  • Tenderness, crepitus and swelling along the tendon.
  • Pain is more commonly present at the mid portion of the tendon or where it attaches into the heel.

If you suspect an Achilles rupture, then you must seek same day assessment at your local A&E services.

Management of Achilles Tendinopathy at Chorley Physiotherapy includes:

  • A comprehensive assessment of the condition identifying possible risk factors contributing to your symptoms.
  • An in-depth management plan that will be an individualised approach.
  • Management advice on return to activity.

If you have a chronic condition and have failed to respond to physiotherapy, then a referral to an orthopaedic specialist may be required.

If you would like further advice, information or to book an assessment then please contact.
